Introduction to the Undeclared Major in College of Communication
In an era defined by a rapidly evolving media landscape, we operate under the core philosophy that “change” is the only unchangeable constant. Moving beyond the traditional boundaries of communication disciplines, the NCCU College of Communication has reconstructed its knowledge framework to integrate critical thinking with creative execution. Our curriculum is specifically designed to equip students not only with fundamental communication skills but also with the innovative capacity required to navigate and shape the future of global media.
To consolidate our resources and foster a truly interdisciplinary learning environment, the College has implemented an "Undeclared Major" system for all first and second year undergraduates since 2014. This structure encourages students to explore diverse communication fields before specializing, thereby enhancing their overall competitiveness. In a further commitment to diversity, we began admitting twenty students from the natural sciences track in 2019. By integrating students from both social and natural science backgrounds, we create a dynamic platform for cross-disciplinary exchange that enriches academic experience for the entire community.
Our curriculum provides a robust foundation through six compulsory core courses (18 credits) and a diverse selection of electives. During the second semester of their sophomore year, students apply to one of our three specialized departments. Journalism, Advertising, or Radio & Television based on their personal aspirations and academic performance. Specialized departmental study officially commences in junior year. Upon completion of the program, the student's primary department will be formally recognized on their diploma.
